How to Start a Paid Telegram Group

Choose a private Telegram group or channel, define a paid offer, connect a bot and Stripe, and test secure invitations and access removal.

By Memberalia · Updated

A paid Telegram community needs a private channel or supergroup, a clear membership offer, payment collection, and a way to connect each paying customer to their Telegram identity. A permanent invite link and a spreadsheet become difficult to manage once renewals and cancellations begin.

Start with one protected community and one plan. Expand after you have tested the full member lifecycle.

Choose a channel or a supergroup

A private channel suits publishing: you send updates to an audience. A private supergroup suits conversation: members exchange messages, ask questions and participate. The access automation can protect either, but the member experience and moderation workload are different.

Format Good fit Operational consideration
Private channel Research notes, lessons, announcements State the publishing cadence
Private supergroup Coaching cohorts, peer groups, discussion Budget moderation time and set rules

Do not assume a paid group makes content impossible to copy. Sell a useful recurring experience and enforce clear community terms; access control is not a guarantee against redistribution.

Make the membership promise specific

Explain what people receive, when they receive it, and how they ask for help. “Premium access” is less useful than “two guided practice sessions each month and a moderated discussion group.”

Choose a price that accounts for the service commitment. At 50 members paying €20/month, gross MRR is €1,000 before software, processing, taxes, refunds and delivery costs. That arithmetic is an example, not a promised business result. The membership pricing calculator lets you work backward from a target without inventing demand.

Keep the community private

Review existing Telegram invite links before launching. Retire permanent links that would let nonpaying people bypass the membership process. Keep a separate public introduction or support route if you want prospective members to see the offer before paying.

Memberalia supports private channels and private supergroups. A public username or reusable invitation is a different access model and can undermine a paid gate.

Connect the shared Memberalia bot

Add @MemberaliaBot as an administrator to the protected community. It needs Invite Users and Ban Users permissions to issue invitations and remove expired members. Memberalia operates this shared bot for every creator.

In Memberalia, click Connect Telegram and generate a secure connection code. Open the bot, select your private group or channel, then return to Memberalia to confirm the verified community. Codes expire in ten minutes and work once.

The Stripe-to-Telegram guide covers the identity and payment flow in detail.

Telegram usernames are optional and can change. The numeric user ID is the durable identity you need for access control.

In the Memberalia flow, a customer opens a short-lived bot deep link and presses Start in the private bot chat. The token links that numeric ID to the pending membership attempt. The customer then returns to Checkout and pays through Stripe on the creator’s connected account.

After confirmed payment, the bot sends an expiring join-request link. Approval checks the requester’s identity and entitlement. Forwarding the link to another person does not give that other person a paid membership.

Test the cases that become support tickets

  • The customer pays on mobile and returns to Telegram.
  • The deep link expires before the customer presses Start.
  • The customer forwards the paid invitation to someone else.
  • A member schedules cancellation but still has paid time remaining.
  • A renewal fails, then succeeds during the grace period.
  • The entitlement expires and the member is removed.
  • A former member subscribes again and receives a new invitation.

Use test payments and a private test community first. A test with the community owner does not represent an ordinary member’s experience.

Launch with clear cancellation terms

Tell members whether payment recurs monthly or annually and how to manage cancellation. A cancellation scheduled for period end retains access until the paid deadline. Failed payments get the default three-day grace period before removal.

Keep your delivery promises realistic. One useful group with active participation is more valuable than several empty tiers. Publish the membership page, invite a small relevant audience, and confirm the first paying member receives both access and the promised value.

Review Telegram memberships and flat monthly pricing when you are ready to automate the workflow.
